170 women victims of gender violence improve their work and social skills through crafts

A total of 170 women victims of gender violence will participate during October and November in the second edition of the 'Empoderarte' project, financed by the General Directorate for Women and Gender Diversity and organized by the General Directorate for Consumption and Crafts, together with the Network of Specialized Care Centers for Women Victims of Gender Violence (CAVI) in the Region of Murcia and other associations.

'Empoderarte' tries to get vulnerable women to train in trades through craft workshops to "improve their professional and social skills, the transmission of knowledge for employment and their self-esteem as a tool for empowerment", explained the general director of Consumption and Crafts, Sonia Moreno, who together with the General Director of Women and Gender Diversity, María José García, presented this morning the new edition of the project.

"The idea is to offer an alternative therapy to women who are victims of gender-based violence and encourage their creativity and job placement, either in craft companies or as a self-employment formula," added Moreno.

For her part, María José García stressed that with this resource "we promote the employability of women who are victims of gender-based violence, a social action that aims to help them be independent and free to develop their vital project," she said.

This project is part of social craftsmanship, which aims to rehabilitate or insert groups at risk of social exclusion through training activities, social or labor insertion that use craft trades, techniques and processes, in accordance with the law. Crafts from the Region of Murcia.

Thus, a total of 21 workshops of different artisan trades, such as esparto, jewelry, painting, embroidery, pottery or flower arrangements, among others, will be taught during craft centers and municipal buildings, in collaboration with the CAVI of the Region of Murcia.

The workshops will be held in three-hour sessions, for five days and with a duration of 15 hours in each of the municipalities where they will be taught (Águilas, Caravaca de la Cruz, Ceutí, Cieza, Cartagena, Fuente Álamo, Lorca, Mazarrón, Molina de Segura, Mula, Murcia, Puerto Lumbreras, San Javier, Santomera, Torre Pacheco, Totana and Yecla). The CAVIs have organized small groups of a maximum of 10 users to carry out these workshops.

21 artisans of recognized prestige will be in charge of giving these workshops to transmit to women the knowledge of their trade, the making of artisan products, the personal strengthening of women and even their initiation as self-employed. As a result of these workshops, an exhibition of the work carried out at the Regional Craft Center of Murcia will be organized on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, on November 25.
